[REPLY]
we rented cars in Spain and France on two occations this spring (May 2013). The cars were as reserved (except once we were given a 8 passenger automatic Mercedes minivan instead of manual Grand Picasso, but it generally drove and parked OK), in good condition, clean and equipped. The check out experience was a little longer then we are used to in US. Plus the description of damage was long and incorrect, that doubled our check-out time. It is silly how it is a non-trivial task to open the trunk, gas lid, etc. Make sure you ask about those things, otherwise you might find yourself in a stupid situation. Even the Europcar agent had to ask for help showing us how to do it. But the major problem is that it was difficult to find the office (both at take and return locations). It is true everywhere if it is not at the airport, but rather in a downtown office or a big city railstation. If you suspect you will not have much time to spend for a car return you have to try to figure out the location in advance. I am not sure it is entirely possible to get detailed instructions though. We had to call multiple times to the office and spent once almost an hour to find the spot. Besides the minivan scraped the height limit bar with its roof in the underground garage entrance. When i parked it eventually on the lot it was less then 2 in between the roof and the ceiling. We were 5 people traveling with a lot of laggage, otherwise i do not recommend renting a big car in Europe.
The cute little VW Golf we rented thru AutoEurope was a pleasure to drive and navigate around Normandy. The car performed very well, and we were very pleased with the service provided by the staff in the office in Rouen where we rented the vehicle.
Very cheerful and helpful. When I was running late, the rep gave me a ride to the train station.
Mobile links to better maps showing pick-up and drop-off locations would be a big help.
Courteous, professional staff made rental pick up and drop off convenient and quick. Staff prepared for pick up with premade reservation at hand. Car clean and in good condition.
We rented a car at Amsterdam Schiphol airport and received prompt and very courteous service at pickup and dropoff. The car was brand new. In summary - we had a great experience and will definitely rent from Auto Europe again.
It is very simple! This is the best auto rental company I have ever used. I used them in Spain twice and France twice and will continue to use them wherever I can.
This has been the third or fourth time I've worked with AutoEurope. For some reason, knowing that they're based in Maine (I"m in NH) makes it more human. But reservations worked very well -- they were able to make a last-minute change easily, and they helpfully advised me not to order the GPS ahead of time for Italy but to get it in the office.
Clients should know that, however easily things work with the Maine office, what goes down in the rental office in a European city can be insane -- long lines, over-stressed agents, etc. We were lucky in Venice this time, but it took a while in Lisbon a few years ago. Clients should also know that, GPS or no GPS, finding the rental office by car in some European cities can be among the most stressful things you can do in this life. It would be terrific, if maybe beyond reasonable expectation, for Auto Europe to note which urban rental offices are easiest to access in particular cities in Europe -- i wish I had contracted for a better drop-off location in Rome last week!
Great experience, but not used to so many "roundabouts"! The car ran flawlessly and got great mileage!
Loved dealing with autoeurope. It was easy, well-priced and convenient. Will definitely use them again.
Needed to get one class lower car since ordered vehicle was not available.
After returning the car I received an additional bill from Hertz. After declining the charge it was reimbursed.
Just returned from the United Kingdom where AutoEurope came to our rescue when we really needed them. We had been saving for and planning a trip to England for 2 years. We stayed in London for 5 days and then had secured a car rental to drive out of London for the following 11 days to tour the country. We had no idea it would be so difficult to navigate out of London with all the round-abouts, narrow streets, traffic, and of course, driving on the other side of the road.
We had only had the rental for an hour when we realized, after blowing a tire on a curb, that we were in over our head in central London. The auto rental agency sent a driver to us, changed our tire, and the driver drove us back to the rental agency (London-Kennington). They went over and beyond to help us. Once back at the rental agency, they helped us contact an AutoEurope representative to see what could be done since we had already paid for the 11 day car rental and we no longer wanted to try to drive out of London.
Meg was our AutoEurope life saver. We were so flustered by this time and she was calm and very, very helpful. She explained that at that time, that our money could not be refunded, but she suggested we rent our cars in our 2 other destinations and then contact customer service on our return to the states to see if any of the money could be refunded.
We ended up taking a train to Bath and Dover and she made us car reservations in our destinations in Bath and Dover.
Once back in the US, I contacted custormer service to see if any of the first reservation money could be refunded since we did rent from AutoEurope, but just not as the first reservation had been planned. Matt was the customer service rep and was efficient and friendly. Meg had made a detailed summary of the situation which made it very easy for Matt to follow.
AutoEurope refunded a good portion of our original reservation which was welcomed. I highly recommend using AutoEurope.
Reservation #3850587, #3896779, #3896792.
I spent some time talking with a couple of agents before making my reservation for a car with a pick up in Florence. I made it clear that my husband and I would be traveling with a bag each and although we were up for a small-ish car, we would need to transport ourselves and our luggage for a week. I arranged for a 2 door car with room for bags. After taking the train from Rome, walking through the streets of Florence with our bags, and finally finding the Avis station in Florence, the agent told us that she only had SMART cars available, that this was the class we had reserved, and that she could give us a much bigger car and only charge us for a car 2 classes larger.
We had a bit of a language barrier and I told her that there was no way we could fit both ourselves and our luggage into such a small car and there was no way I would have reserved one. She reiterated that she would give us a deal on a larger car and that we had ordered the SMART car. She had no other cars available and appeared frustrated with my inability to understand that I had ordered this tiny car. Hot, tired, and bummed, I told her that I would call Auto Europe to straighten it out. As I sat down with my luggage in the somewhat busy waiting area and started to call, she "found" a Volkswagen in the garage which she arranged for us to have at no extra charge. Because she was so nice.
Long story short, although the car was fine and I ultimately got it at the agreed upon price, I could have done without the drama. Traveling can be a challenge, and I booked with Auto Europe well ahead of time so I could avoid exactly this sort of hassle. I'm guessing that most people just pay the extra cost to avoid this sort of unpleasantness in the middle of their vacations, but that doesn't make it good business practice.
It was easy and reliable up to a point. Agent I talked to was helpful. I paid a lot for an automatic car in Italy...was told a Mercedes A class was booked for that price. When I got there only a Ford Fiesta was available. Still trying to figure out how to get the difference back...
My confirmed reservation was for a "BMW Series 1" or equivalent.
Upon arrival at the counter, I was handed the keys to a Mazda. Few people would consider this an "equivalent".
When I declined the Mazda, they said the only German car available "in my category" was an Opel, which included GPS (which I did not want).
I took the Opel and was pleased with it, but it cost me €133 more than for what I had contracted with you.
Great experience! Quick, easy, no surprises can't really do better then that.
Pick up and return at Hertz were effortless, and the service was friendly and efficient. The car (a Volvo S60 with automatic transmission) was in good shape, and we returned it in the same shape. We will definitely use AutoEurope.com again. We had used Sicily by Car on our last trip and had some problems, so we especially appreciated the Hertz service this time.
Booking easy, pick up and delivery to another city easy. Picked up Skoda Citgo
Amboise, Fr. Only trouble my credit card does not have raised numbers and the man at the pick up would not punch the numbers in to take the card. This should never have
happened & was costly to us. All French pick ups seem to say downtown but are
a couple miles out as was this one. Needed taxi. Drop off in Louvier was easy and
they did take my card. Total unnecessary inconvenience. We had never head of this
car before but the man at pick up was good about showing all the necessary switches.
Except this car has a little switch that controls the light beams. About the 3rd day that
switch got bumped and the headlight aimed to the sides instead of front this caused one very scary night driving home. The next day the girl at auto europe figured out the problem. Except for the credit card incident I would use auto europe again.
I ask for red. economy and got it. Easy to drive & good visual field.
I usually book direct with Europcar but decided to go with auto Europe and found out that there is no avenue for me to use a VAT form in order to save money on the tax. This ended up costing me dearly since I booked three rental cars through Auto Europe before I realized this.
Rented a small Fiat from Hertz through Auto Europe. Everything went as planned, no problems with the reservations, car was waiting for us and return went smoothly.
Thanks much,
Tom
europecar is easy enough to deal with, but everytime we've been charged by the rent company for some extra charge. Usually it is $8 to $20, which we pay on the credit card. This year it is $152 from EuropeCar. We have no idea what the charge is for. The car was returned early, full of gas, and the keys dropped in a drop box. Please explain why we have been charged the additional expense.
We enjoyed the friendly service and the Excellent car which we drove.
We were worried since it was going to be the first time we we were
renting a car outside the United States, but we did not have any problems at all.
Plus they have a program that they will ship you a GPS rent free and you just pay
the $ 40. shipping Fee which was awesome.
I trully woud recommend Auto Europe without reaservations. I rate them
with 5 Stars.

Auto Europe was also in front with easy to navigate sight,follow-up right before rental date, and paper work all in place when we arrived at the Florence airport . Hertz became our agency and the agent at check in could not have been more helpful. As senior adults in their late 60's, we were a little apprehensive about our first overseas driving experience, so the time spent with us by the agent was very helpful. I would wish for a little more clarity in the size car needed; how much luggage canbe carried, yes, but also covered. We probably could have gone with one step down in size.
We rented a car for a week, pick up Civitavecchia, drop-off Padova. When rain was forecast for Padova, we switched to drop-off at Rome. No call necessary. USA help in making the reservation was great. The Fiat was fun to drive and had no problems.
Civitavecchia location could be better.
Checking in to National at the Marco Polo airport was less than satisfactory as the customer service person was abrupt and indifferent to our needs. The car we used was very satisfactory and would use such a vehicle again. The staff outside at the car location was very helpful. When we returned the car again the outside staff was competent and helpful.
. Making the reservation was very easy. The representative was kind, well informed, and gave great advice. For instance, our need to obtain an international drivers license before traveling. However, we ended up having a last-minute change to our Italian itinerary, and returned the car two days early. We were disappointed that their policy is not to refund un-used days! Travel plans these days often take unexpected turns, and it is nice when company policies reflect this reality.
slightly cheaper than going direct, all rental companies in one spot, easy to compare
You were easy to deal with and the price beat your competition, thanks for making the trip easier.
Wonderful experience I think unless I get a charge on my credit charge which I don't expect . Time will tell that
The only bad incident was receiving the papers at the counter in Maggiore, Rome Airport ; the lady at the front desk was very nasty answering questions to us. And husband ask her for her name , and she said I am not giving my name to you.......
But was an excellent car and no problems with other personal in the agency.
The best thing in the trip was the GPS Garmin Nubi thru your agency.. THANKS
I have been using this company exclusively since before 2000 for my rental cars in Europe. Traveling two or three times a year, mainly in Italy has given me a good overview of what to expect when renting from Auto Europe. The best thing about this company is the service their people provide, both in the US and in Italy. I know they sub-contract with rental car offices in Italy but they seem to choose the most knowledgeable and skilled contractors available. On a couple of occasions when I've tried another company I did not get the service or price that is consistently what I can expect and is delivered from Auto Europe.
I've heard "nightmare" stories about renting cars in foreign countries and thankfully, using Auto Europe I've not had to experience such things. Most especially, when I get to my destination I get just what I ordered. This is my car rental company for life!
you're not home free with the extra insurance and gas deal they all do. It worked out fine and the car was bigger than requested at no additional cost.
for 6 years i have been renting cars from auto europe about twice a year.i have been satisfied every time.good rates, curteous service,flexibility-what's not to like?i'll keep renting from them every time i travel to europe.
Rented a car in Spain for 12 days with AutoEurope. Picked it up at Avis in Barcelona airport and returned it to Malaga airport. There were no hidden fees with Autoeurope and I was pleased with them.
We enjoyed driving the Citroen around France with plenty of pep and great fuel mileage. The staff was very helpful when we picked up our car at the rail station in Perpignon, France. The GPS was a nice bonus. Thank you for asking!
Following booking and payment in full being made prior to my trip to Australia I was charged an additional amount on pickup of the vehicle that was approximately half again of the original amount paid.
Got a great deal on reputable, Hertz rental car and a great car i got.. SUV Volvo. Practically new and very clean. The Hertz people took the paid voucher and processed quickly. The only issue I had was when I got the car, they charged me an extra $10 for... not sure exactly what but I needed to get out of there so I paid and went. Wish it was clear I didn't pay in full when I paid for the voucher. Minor annoyance but would use the service again.
We had booked a basic car, and Auto-Europe provided a solid, cofortable car with good trunk space.
I leased a car through Auto Europe to pick up in Florence, Italy. The entire car rental facility in Florence is primitive - kind of like camping. The cars are in a grassy lot, the rental agencies are housed in trailers with small awnings, the bathroom is something you'd expect at a temporary outdoor music festival, and there is no place to wait for the shuttle bus that would provide protection in case of rain. We arrived at this "facility" via the shuttle bus and presented ourselves to the Auto Europe staff. Two guys. Barely communicative. Unpleasant personalities. They checked their records and said - "Nope, we don't have any record of your rental." I had given them all of the information I had - voucher number, etc. -- and asked them to double check, but no, they didn't have any record of it. Their advice -- "Go down to Herz. Maybe they have your rental." What? Why? No explanation. So I went to the Herz agency --- stood in line again -- and the agent there did have a record of my rental. Now...no one could explain to me why I could book a car through Auto Europe but have to pick it up at Herz. The Herz agent was helpful, to a degree. Never got instructions as to how to get out of the city, nor a map, nor instructions as to how to come back to the facility. But at least I got a car. But the whole experience left me a bit shaken and wondering why was there such a crappy car rental agency at the Florence Italy airport, of all places? And I still don't get Auto Europe and how they could transfer my rental to another agency without notice or explanation. And their two agents -- I'm sure they do NOT know what the words "customer service" might mean.
My advice: Please do never rent a car with Hertz at Dusseldorf Airport. I have rented cars all over the world and I never had a single problem. This is the first time I had a terrible experience. Maybe because I did not use any insurance, as it is provided by my American Express credit card, when I returned the car, they did a millimetric scanning to find scratches, dents or minor damages just to find a reason to charge me. The car I rented had a bad damage on the left side of the bumper, that wasn't caused by me, and I am being charged for a minor scratch on the left side and a "microscopic" dent. In reality, I am being held accountable for a pre-existing damage.
I would use Auto Europe again. Our only problem is timing our arrival to the pick-up site before 1 pm. We had to wait 2 hrs to pick up the car due to the 1pm to 4pm closure of the pick up site
Prices were reasonable
